5-star question: Which programs land the most elite talent per position?

Crimson Tide easily tops nation for most 5-star players signed and drafted, but at how many positions?

There’s been a lot of talk over the years about position U, meaning that a school is so good at a certain position that it owns it, or stands out in college football.

Here’s a new way to look at the argument.

To wrap up our database series on 5-star recruits, and which programs have been the best at developing elite talent during the Nick Saban era at Alabama, we broke down the 386 consensus selections (according to the 247Sports composite rankings) over the last 12 years by position.

In short, it’s a breakdown at where the 5-star players have been signing.

Overall, the numbers boil down to this: Since 2008 consensus 5-star players have had a slightly-better than 50 percent odds of getting drafted, and a 20 percent chance of being selected in the first round from the schools in which they signed.

Granted, some have still been drafted after transferring, but this establishes the baseline.

PLAYERS BY POSITION

Position, Total, Active, Drafted (Percent), 1st Round (Percent)

Quarterbacks 29 6 9 (39.1) 3 (13.0)

Running backs 48 11 17 (46.0) 3 (8.1)

Wide Receivers 45 11 15 (44.1) 7 (20.6)

Tight end 5 0 3 (60.0) 1 (20.0)

Offensive linemen 50 20 17 (56.7) 7 (23.3)

Defensive line 95 23 43 (59.7) 16 (22.2)

Linebackers 42 11 15 (48.4) 5 (16.1)

Defensive backs 58 16 26 (61.9) 13 (31.0)

Athletes 14 1 8 (61.5) 3 (23.1)

Totals 386 99 153 (53.3) 58 (20.2)

Before we examine each position group and then show our work, a couple of reminders:

  • Every other program listed has had at least one coaching change since Saban arrived at Alabama.
  • The Crimson Tide’s totals include the recent departure of sophomore linebacker Eyabi Anoma, who entered the NCAA transfer portal this week.
  • Any player who left his program and was still drafted from another team doesn’t count toward his original school.

Quarterback

There’s no clear frontrunner as four schools have signed three consensus 5-star players over the past 12 years: Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and USC. Among them only three players have been drafted (none in the first round) with three others still active including Tua Tagovailoa, last year’s Heisman Trophy runner-up.

The stat that really jumps out at the position is the high number of transfers. Of the 29 quarterbacks to be a consensus 5-star player since 2008, 13 have transferred. Factor out active players who are still at their original schools and that’s 57 percent.

Running backs

It’s downright alarming that of the 48 players to be hailed as a consensus 5-star running back, just three have been drafted in the first round over the last 12 years.

However, a lot of that has to do with the NFL teams going with more of a platoon system, and dividing carries between multiple backs.

Alabama has a perfect record in having its 5-star running backs being drafted, although the player with the best ranking, Trent Richardson, arguably struggled the most as a pro.

Program, Total, Active, Drafted (Percent), 1st Round (percent)

Alabama 7 2 5 (100) 1 (20.0)

Georgia 7 2 3 (60.0) 1 (20.0)

Florida State and Oklahoma tied with four

Wide receivers

It’s going to surprise a lot of people to learn that LSU has landed the most consensus 5-star wide receivers over the last 12 years, with five. Three were drafted, one transferred and one is active.

Tied for second with four is Alabama, Clemson and USC, although the Trojans haven’t had much luck there with three undrafted players and the fourth still active. The Crimson Tide gets the nod because it’s the only program to have two first-round picks, and Amari Cooper doesn’t count because he was a consensus 4-star prospect.

Tight end

There have been only five consensus 5-star tight ends since 2008, of which only were drafted and just one in the first round: Alabama’s O.J. Howard.

Offensive linemen

Alabama has dominated with nearly twice as many 5-star players as anyone else. Since Tyler Love was signed in 2008, the Crimson Tide has hit with every other lineman, with not only everyone drafted but no one fell below the second round.

Georgia is hoping to close the gap with four active 5-star talents up front.

Program, Total, Active, Drafted (Percent), 1st Round (percent)

Alabama 8 2 5 (83.3) 2 (33.3)

Georgia 5 4 1 (100.0) 0 (0.0)

Ohio State 5 3 1 (50.0) 0 (0.0)

Defensive linemen

The Sunshine State schools had largely led the way over the past 12 years, but neither Florida nor Florida State has had much to show for it of late. Georgia has came back and matched their overall numbers, but gets an incomplete grade due to not enough draft success.

Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson have had draft success, especially the Tigers, but are lacking in overall numbers. Surprisingly tying them were USC and UCLA.

Consequently, there’s no clear frontrunner.

Program, Total, Active, Drafted (Percent), 1st Round (percent)

Florida 8 0 5 (62.5) 3 (37.5)

Florida State 8 2 4 (66.7) 0 (0.0)

Georgia 8 3 3 (60.0) 0 (0.0)

Ohio State 6 3 2 (66.7) 1 (33.3)

Alabama 5 2 2 (66.7) 1 (33.3)

Clemson 5 2 3 (100.0) 2 (66.7)

USC 5 0 2 (40.0) 0 (0.0)

UCLA 5 1 2 (50.0) 0 (0.0)

Linebackers

This is another position group where Alabama has completely dominated. Since 2008, Alabama has signed eight consensus 5-star players and the only one who wasn’t drafted (Trey DePriest) could be partly blamed on the game changing due to spread, up-tempo offenses.

Ohio State is the only other program to land more than four (Florida State and Georgia). The Buckeyes have two who are still active, but just one player drafted.

Defensive backs

Remember all that talk about which school should be considered DBU between Florida and LSU? You might look at the position group a little differently after this.

Since 2008, Saban has signed 10 consensus 5-star defensive backs, easily the most in college football. He’s had two transfer, B.J. Scott left for more playing time at South Alabama and Kendell Sheffield ended up at Ohio State. Patrick Surtain II is active and Tony Brown was a a free agent who is still playing in the NFL.

Five of the six players who were drafted went in the first round. That’s the most of any position group during this time span. The other was Landon Collins, and we’re still trying to figure out why he fell to the second round in 2015.

Program, Total, Active, Drafted (Percent), 1st Round (percent)

Alabama 10 1 6 (66.7) 5 (55.6)

Florida State 7 1 4 (66.7) 2 (33.3)

LSU 7 3 2 (50.0) 2 (50.0)

USC 7 1 5 (83.3) 1 (16.7)

Florida 5 0 3 (69.0) 2 (40.0)
