5-star question: Which programs nationally are best at developing elite talent?

Courtesy of Alabama Athletics

Crimson Tide easily tops nation for most 5-star players drafted and selected in first round during the Nick Saban era

If your son was considered a consensus 5-star talent, where would you want him to play football and attend school?

It’s a question that more and more former NFL players have been asking themselves lately.

If you go by the draft, and how well programs have been developing players to play at the next level there’s really only a few that should be considered.

After crunching the Southeastern Conference numbers regarding development of consensus 5-star prospects since 2008, the national statistics are even more eye-popping.

To begin with, of the 386 players who were rated to be a consensus 5-star player there are 99 still active, leaving 287 who had been eligible to be drafted.

Just 152 were selected, or 53.0 percent.

As a reminder, the SEC’s average was 57.6 percent. Of those 152 there’s an even 50-50 split between those who signed to play in the SEC and those who didn’t.

Overall, there were 58 former consensus 5-star players selected in the first round, or just 15 percent of the original 386. Of them, 35 signed and developed in the SEC, compared to 23 who signed elsewhere.

Since Nick Saban signed his first full recruiting class at Alabama, the Crimson Tide has landed 47 consensus 5-star talents. Among them, 26 ended being drafted with 15 selected in the first round.

All three numbers lead college football during that time period by a wide margin, and Alabama still has 11 active 5-star players on the roster.

In terms of percentages, the Crimson Tide is very close to the top across the board.

For example, Penn State and Stanford have had every 5-star prospect over the last 12 years selected in the draft, but really can’t call that a tremendous success since on average they’ve signed a 5-star player every other year.

Clemson has a higher overall percentage than Alabama, but not when it comes to first-round selections.

Regardless, even though the Tigers have signed roughly one-third of the 5-star talents as the Crimson Tide, it’s enough to say that the program is having comparable success.

It may be the biggest reason why the two programs keep playing for the national championship.

To things to sleep in mind when looking at the draft numbers:

  • Every other program listed has had at least one coaching change since Saban arrived at Alabama.
  • The Crimson Tide’s totals include the recent departure of sophomore linebacker Eyabi Anoma, who entered the NCAA transfer portal this week.
  • Any player who left his program and was still drafted from another team doesn’t count toward this original school.
  • Ole Miss is listed at the end due to NCAA sanctions.
