Alabama has 68 former players on NFL rosters as training camps open

With Andre Smith re-signing with the Bengals, Alabama could fill an entire 53-man roster plus an entire practice squad

The opening of training camps in the National Football League marks the unofficial end of summer, but more importantly to some it also signals the start of the upcoming college season as well.

While Alabama is preparing for its current players to report on Thursday, there are so many former players in the league that they could form their own team.

With the league having 53-man roster limits it’s been that way for a couple of years.

What’s different is that Alabama could fill 60 percent of an NFL team with just the players selected during the last three years.

You may remember that the Crimson Tide had 12 players selected in 2018 to break both the school and SEC record for most players taken in a single draft. Alabama’s modern record was set the previous year, 10, which it tied this year.

That’s 32 players drafted over three years.

Overall, with former first-round selection Andre Smith signing with the Bengals this week to help replace the loss of first-round selection Jonah Williams, who is out for the season after having shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum, there are 68 former players on NFL rosters.

Last year, Alabama had the most active players on kickoff weekend — which is the only time the NFL takes a snapshot of all rosters because they’re otherwise always fluid — with 44. LSU was second with 40 and Florida third with 37. The previous year, 2017, Alabama and LSU were tied for the most with 39.

Only four teams don’t have a former Crimson Tide player on the active roster: Rams, Saints, Eagles and 49ers. All of them had an Alabama player last year.

The most popular position is linebacker, where there are 13 former Alabama players, plus free agent Rolando McClain is trying to make a comeback at age 30.
