Linebackers Anfernee Jennings, Terrell Lewis and Dylan Moses and safety Xavier McKinney up for national awards

The University of Alabama defense had four players named to national award watch lists on Monday.

Anfernee Jennings, Terrell Lewis and Dylan Moses were all on the 2019 Dick Butkus Award Watch List announced today by the Butkus Foundation, while safety Xavier McKinney was tabbed for the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

The Butkus is for the best linebacker, while the Thorpe goes to the top defensive back.

Jennings, Lewis and Moses are among 51 candidates from around the nation named to the preseason list for the Butkus, meaning the Crimson Tide make up roughly 6 percent of the contenders.

Four Alabama players have won the award previously, with Reuben Foster the most recent in 2016. The others were C.J. Mosley (2013), Rolando McClain (2009) and Derrick Thomas (1988).

No school had more than one player on the Thorpe watch list, which helps explain the absence of cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and Patrick Surtain II. Consequently, only 46 players were named.

Minkah Fitzpatrick won the award in 2017, while Antonio Langham previously won in 1993.
