Stat pack: 1,000-yard rushing seasons, 100-yard games becoming scarce

Crimson Tide had only three 100-yard performances, and no one reach 1,000 rushing yards last season

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Even though the University of Alabama had two running backs selected during the 2019 NFL Draft, it didn’t have one reach the 1,000-yard rushing milestone last season.

Damien Harris came the closest with 891, falling short in his bid to become the first player in Crimson Tide history to post three 1,000-yard seasons.

While some will argue that it was due to the carries being divided between three running backs, Harris still had a carrier-high 150 carries, while Josh Jacobs had 130 and Najee Harris 117.

It was a career high for Damien Harris. He had 146 carries in 2016, when he finished with 1,037 rushing yards, and 135 as a junior when he had exactly 1,000. His average per carry dropped from 7.1 and 7.4, respectively, to 5.8.

Nevertheless, over the past five seasons the Crimson Tide has only had one in which a running back was well beyond 1,000 rushing yards, 2015 when Alabama rode Derrick Henry to the national championship. He, in turn, had 395 carries for 2,219 rushing yards en route to winning the Heisman Trophy.

It might be a really, really long time before those numbers are topped, if ever.

Although it seems likely that more playoff games will eventually be added, the trend is already clearly going the other way as more and more NFL teams are going away from having a featured running back.

Many colleges are following suit. One of the reasons why Jacobs was a first-round draft selection by the Oakland Raiders was he was still considered “fresh” and not run down.

Even 100-yard rushing games are on the decline at Alabama.

In 2012, Alabama had the first 1,000-yard rushing tandem in program history with Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon.

Two years later, Derrick Henry had 990 rushing yards while Yeldon tallied 979.

Last year, Damien Harris had 891, Najee Harris 812 and Jacobs 657.

Despite what might happen this year, with Najee Harris poised to have a big year, that’s the wave of the future at the position.
