Gunnell accounted for 566 yards in rare loss Friday

Arizona football commit Grant Gunnell passed for more than 500 yards on Friday night ... in a loss.

His Houston St. Pius X team fell 57-48 to Prestonwood Christian of Plano, Texas, in a big matchup of undefeated teams. This was a rematch of the 2017 Division I state title game for the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Prestonwood Christian won that game 42-41.

On Friday night, Gunnell completed 43 of 59 passes for 506 yards, with six touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed 17 times for 56 yards. Given lost yardage elsewhere on the team, Gunnell actually accounted for more yards (566) than the St. Pius X team (556).

The Panthers dropped to 4-1.

Gunnell, who is 6-foot-6 and rated the 14th-best pro-style quarterback in the country, is still taking dead aim at a couple of major career passing records in Texas high school history.

He has 13,544 passing yards, needing 865 to break the mark of 14,408, held by Hunter Lile. Gunnell has 167 career passing touchdowns -- 17 short of the record Travis Quintanilla's record of 184. He also is nearing 1,400 career rushing yards.

This season, according to MaxPreps, Gunnell has thrown for 25 touchdowns, with two interceptions.
