Arizona Wildcats DL PJ Johnson talks about getting pulled over

Condition of his car helped save him from ticket

Arizona defensive lineman PJ Johnson, a junior college transfer, met with the media Tuesday for the first time.

We knew, from talking to teammates, that the big guy with the gold teeth has a big personality ... which he began to show on the field last week at Oregon State. He returned after missing two games because of a foot injury, making three tackles, including two for loss and a sack, doing some stomping and screaming after his big plays.

"I'm really passionate," he said. You can ask my Pop Warner coach or you can watch my high school film, JUCO film. I'm excited. I love football."

Johnson on Tuesday further explained this tweet he sent Monday.

He was pulled over in his 1997 Toyota Camry that has about 180,000 miles. (You can hear his full response above.)

"So, I was driving home and I was tired, I was kinda swerving," he said. "I have an old bucket, like my car is beat. It like has one mirror. I guess I was swerving. I was just trying to get home because I had been here since 7 in the morning. And I see the lights and I'm like 'Oh my god.'

"He tells me to get out of the car and we're talking and he'l like, 'I was only going to give you a warning and my printer is not working and, by the looks of your car, you can't afford a ticket, so I'm just going to let you go."

Johnson, who goes about 335 pounds, has two children back home in Sacramento -- Tolu (who will be 3 on Saturday) and Kiara, who is almost 7 months). He said they come to every home game. Arizona plays host to USC on Saturday night at Arizona Stadium, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

"I will strive to never fail so I can give my kids a better life," he said.
