Stanford deals Lady Bears their 1st loss, 68-63
Stanford’s Alanna Smith got hot from beyond the arc in the second quarter and helped the Cardinal control the game as it handed Baylor its first loss of the season, 68-63, on Saturday afternoon at Maples Pavilion.
Smith nailed a pair of 3-pointers in the first minute of the second quarter and another one midway through the period to fuel a 15-3 run that put the 11th-ranked Cardinal in front, 32-16. Stanford established a 41-24 lead at halftime.
It took third-ranked Baylor (8-1) until the fourth quarter to climb back within double digits. The Lady Bears did so when NaLyssa Smith made a layup on an assist from Chloe Jackson. However, Baylor couldn’t get the defensive stops it needed at the end of the game to retake the lead.
Baylor’s DiDi Richards made a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to cut Stanford’s final margin to five.
Jackson and Smith each scored 15 points to lead Baylor, but they were the only Lady Bears in double digits.
Stanford held the Baylor post duo of Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox to a combined seven points. Baylor out-rebounded the Cardinal, 43-30. But the Lady Bears couldn’t finish at the basket as they shot just 35 percent.
Alanna Smith scored 21 points to lead Stanford (7-1).
