The preseason is a time for NFL teams to get their depth chart sorted out. Teams will be forced to cut ties with upwards of 40 percent of their roster before the regular season begins, and the Bengals still have questions that need answers.
Cincinnati will play host to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday night for their first preseason action of 2019. Here are four things all fans should be watching for:
Zac Taylor's offense
Zac Taylor brings a new presence to the field the Bengals fans haven't seen in a long time. Taylor was a great quarterback coach for Jared Goff in LA, and many are excited to see what he brings to the table in Cincinnati.
A good head coach can make a world of difference, and there are many who believe Zac Taylor will be that guy. We will get a first look at his offense when they take the field this Saturday.
With A.J. Green and John Ross missing time from injuries, the Bengals have a plethora of young receivers who will have the opportunity to sort themselves out during preseason.
Josh Malone and Cody Core are labeled as the primary backups on the Bengals initial 2019 depth chart, but a lot can change in a short time. Stanley Morgan Jr. and Damion Willis are two players out to prove they belong on this team.
Germaine Pratt has been one of the bright spots on defense this training camp. The Bengals lost their 1st round pick, Jonah Williams, with labrum surgery, and 2nd round tight end, Drew Sample, doesn't stand to play a major role to start the season.
Pratt has the best chance on Cincinnati's roster to be an impact rookie from the gate. He is currently behind Jordan Evans at WLB, but a great preseason showing against the Chiefs could help swing some momentum in his favor.
The quarterback competition has been interesting in Cincinnati, and it could end up being a three-man race behind Andy Dalton.
Jeff Driskel has a leg up on the competition with 9 NFL games and 5 starts under his belt, but rookie Ryan Finley is said to not be far behind. Even Jake Dolegala has drawn some buzz in camp. Pay close attention to these quarterbacks Saturday night.
