The Cleveland Browns have announced they are waiving tight end Rico Gathers, who was brought in for the last month of training camp. The massive, athletic Gathers offered a ton of potential as a basketball player becoming a football player out of college, but after a couple seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, it simply never came together for him. Gathers has yet to truly embrace the physicality of blocking and he hasn't shown anything as a pass catcher to this point.
Gathers survived the initial wave of roster cut downs because he was suspended for the first week of the season and didn't count against the roster. The Browns moving are moving on from him now so he never gets to that point, so this release does not give the Browns the ability to sign someone else to replace him. They are still at 53 players. If they were to add a player, they'd have to make a corresponding cut.
As it currently stands, the Browns tight end group consists of David Njoku, Demetrius Harris, Pharaoh Brown and Ricky Seals-Jones, who was acquired on waivers at the roster cut down deadline, which if it wasn't clear already that Gathers wasn't going to make the team, sealed his fate.
