Marty Wilson will be retained as an assistant coach at Cal, according to Jon Rothstein on Twitter.
If Wilson is kept on the staff it will give Cal two former Division I head coaches as assistants on head coach Mark Fox's staff: former Stanford head coach Trent Johnson and Wilson, who was the the head coach at Pepperdine for seven seasons before being hired by Cal as an assistant last April. It looks like Iowa assistant Andrew Francis will be the third assistant coach on Fox's staff. There was also a report that New Mexico assistant coach Chris Harriman is joining the Cal staff.
Retaining Wilson from Wyking Jones' staff might provide a small sense of continuity for a program that is undergoing a major overhaul. The presence of Wilson may help lure some of the players considering transferring back to Cal. Darius McNeill has already announced that he is transferring to SMU, but four other Cal players, including leading scorer Justice Sueing, still have their names in the transfer portal but have not yet made a move to another school.
