Arizona State's Kianna Ibis, the Sun Devils' leading scorer, had blistered Cal for 26 points in Arizona State's 62-61 victory over the Bears last month.
On Friday, however, she missed her first 10 shots and did not score until the final minute of the game, when Cal had things under control. She finished 1-for-11 from the field for just three points, helping Cal to a 69-60 victory. It was a season low for Ibis, whose previous scoring low was six points against Stanford. Ibis had averaged 18.4 points in the nine games since that contest against the Cardinal.
Jaelyn Brown handled the defensive assignment on Ibis for the most part, but as Lindsay Gottlieb points out, a lot elements were involved in keeping the Sun Devils' star under control.
In the teams' first meeting, Ibis was 9-for-12 from the field, including 4-for-4 on three-pointers. She was 1-for-4 on three-pointers on Friday, with the one made three coming in the closing seconds.
The Bear hope to produce another strong defensive performance on Sunday against Arizona in the Bears' final home game of the season. Arizona beat Cal 60-55 in Tucson, Ariz., back on January 11. The Wildcats shot just 36.8 percent in that game, but they committed only six turnovers while the Bears turned the ball over 18 times.
