Worst Losses: Saint Mary’s

Famous alumnus: Bing Crosby

Considerations: Zags had won 21 straight games, all by double-digit margins, before losing the WCC title game to Saint Mary’s

Comment: The unexpected loss to Saint Mary’s will not prevent the Zags from advancing deep into NCAA Tournament


Name to Know: Darnell Edge, all-Northeast Conference

Best Wins: St. Francis (Pa.) (twice), Princeton (road)

Worst Losses: Lafayette (home), Central Connecticut (home)

Famous alumnus: Peggy Noonan, Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal columnist

Considerations: The Knights are 0-5 alltime in the NCAA Tournament

Comment: Fairleigh Dickinson will be heading back to Teaneck, N.J., before the week is over

16. PRAIRIE VIEW (22-12)

Name to Know: Gary Blackston, first-team all-SWAC

Best Wins: Texas Southern (twice), Santa Clara (road)

Worst Losses: Texas Southern, UT Rio Grand Valley

Famous alumnus: Mr. T

Considerations: Panthers started 1-11, but won 21 of their last 22 games

Comment: In its only previous NCAA Tournament game, Prairie View lost to Kansas by 58 points in 1998


8. SYRACUSE (20-13)

Name to Know: Tyus Battle, third-team all-ACC

Best Wins: Duke (road), Louisville

Worst Losses: Connecticut, Georgia Tech (home)

Famous alumnus: Bob Costas

Considerations: Jim Boeheim is 74 years old, but his zone defense keeps giving teams problems in the postseason

Comment: Somehow Syracuse always goes a round two further than it should

9. BAYLOR (19-13)

Name to Know: Makai Mason, second-team all-Big 12

Best Wins: Texas Tech, Iowa State (road)

Worst Losses: Texas Southern, Stephen F. Austin

Famous alumnus: Willie Nelson (two years)

Considerations: Bears lost to a lower seeded team in 2017, 2016, 2015

Comment: Not good enough to go far


5. MARQUETTE (24-9)

Name to Know: Markus Howard, Big East player of the year

Considerations: Marquette lost its last five of its last six games

Comment: Late-season slide may lead to early exit

13. VERMONT (27-6)

Best Wins: St. Bonaventure, George Mason (road), Stony Brook (twice)

Worst Losses: Maryland-Baltimore County (twice), Bucknell

Famous alumnus: Ben Affleck (one semester)

Considerations: Catamounts played Kansas and Louisville and at least were competitive

Comment: Vermont is no pushover


6. BUFFALO (31-3)

Name to Know: CJ Massinburg, MAC player of the year

Best Wins: Syracuse (road), Toledo (road)

Worst Losses: Northern Illinois

Famous alumnus: Wolf Blitzer, CNN

Considerations: Bulls upset fourth-seeded Arizona by 21 points in 2018 NCAAs

Comment: Very talented, but pressure of higher expectations this time may doom Buffalo

11. ARIZONA STATE (22-10)

Name to Know: Zylan Cheatham, first-team all-Pac-12

Best Wins: Kansas, Washington, Mississippi State

Worst Losses: Washington State, Vanderbilt

Famous alumnus: Jimmy Kimmel

Considerations: Rob Edwards had games of 28 and 19 points, but also had three games with zero points.

Comment: Great one day, horrible the next, Sun Devils could make a deep run or lose their opener

11. ST. JOHN’S (21-12)

Name to Know: Shamorie Ponds, first-team all-Big East

Best Wins: Marquette (twice), Villanova

Worst Losses: DePaul (twice), Providence (twice)

Famous alumnus: Mario Cuomo

Considerations: Red Storm is 9-1 when Ponds scores 24 points or more.

Comment: NCAA Tournament opponents won’t let Ponds go off, so St. John’s postseason may be short


3. TEXAS TECH (26-6)

Name to Know: Jarrett Culver, Big 12 Player of the Year

Best Wins: Kansas State, Kansas

Worst Losses: West Virginia, Iowa State (home)

Considerations: Red Raiders lead the nation in field-goal percentage defense

Comment: The lack of scoring is a concern for Texas Tech, which could be an upset victim

Considerations: Nevada reached the Sweet 16 last year, and most of the players from that team are back

Comment: The Wolf Pack is talented enough and fearless enough to do some postseason damage

10. FLORIDA (19-15)

Name to Know: Jalen Hudson, team’s best offensive weapon lately

Best Wins: LSU (twice), Alabama (road), Arkansas (road)

Worst Losses: Georgia (home), Butler (home)

Famous alumnus: Erin Andrews

Considerations: Florida had lost three straight before beating Arkansas and LSU in SEC tournament

Comment: Gators have no player who can carry them in a time of need, so look for an early exit


2. MICHIGAN (28-6)

Name to Know: Ignas Brazdeikis, second-team all-Big Ten

Best Wins: North Carolina, Villanova (road), Purdue

Worst Losses: Penn State

Famous alumnus: Madonna

Considerations: Wolverines, the national runnersup last year, started this season 17-0 and were ranked No. 2

Comment: John Beilein’s teams typically do well in the postseason, so look for Michigan in the second weekend

15. MONTANA (26-8)

Name to Know: Ahmaad Rorie, two-time first-team all-Big Sky

Best Wins: South Dakota State (road), Northern Colorado (road), Georgia State

Worst Losses: Portland State (twice)

Famous alumnus: Carroll O’Conner (Archie Bunker)

Considerations: Montana among the nation’s leaders in field goal percentage at 49.7 percent

Comment: Grizzlies might be competitive in early-round game, but unlikely to win
