Cal Football: Bears Promote Andrew Browning to Defensive Line Coach

Browning was a defensive quality control assistant last year & was D-line coach at UTEP for 5 seasons

One day after Tony Tuioti's exit to Nebraska became official, Cal coach Justin Wilcox filled the defensive line coach vacancy from within, hiring defensive quality control assistant Andrew Browning to handle the assignment.

Browning, 35, also has five years' experience (2013-17) as defensive line coach at Texas-El Paso.

Browning is a graduate of Boise State, where he was an all-Western Athletic Conference first-team defensive lineman in 2006 during Wilcox's time there as defensive coordinator.

"Andrew has put in a tremendous amount of work and given a ton of his energy to be in position for this opportunity," Wilcox said in a statement. "I had the opportunity to witness firsthand his work ethic and commitment as a player at Boise State. He is an outstanding young coach who is tireless, as well as both an excellent student and teacher of the game.

"Andrew has applied what he has learned from some of the top coaches in the game and will be a valuable addition to our staff in his new role as defensive line coach."

Browning said he is grateful that Wilcox has faith he can capably replace Tuioti.

"We are building a program at Cal that everyone can be proud of, and I'm thrilled to be able to contribute and be a part of it in this new capacity," Browning said.

Browning coached future NFL players James Davidson, Horace Miller and Roy Robertson-Harris during his time at UTEP, but the Miners struggled through much of that time.

They were a combined 18-43 from 2013-17, including a bowl game in 2014 but also an 0-12 record in '17, when head coach Sean Kugler resigned after an 0-5 start.

UTEP's national rankings for total defense those seasons: 107th nationally in 2013, 38th in 2014, 93rd in 2015, 70th in 2016 and 107th in 2017.

Before UTEP, Browning spent three seasons on the coaching staff at Boise State, his alma mater. He was defensive quality control coach in 2010 and a grad assistant in 2011 and 2012. Boise posted a combined record of 35-4 those three seasons.

Browning spent the 2008 season with the San Jose Sabercats before moving on to begin is coaching career.

Browning is a native of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and is married.
