To no one's surprise third-year sophomore Chase Garbers was officially named the starting quarterback for next Saturday's season opener against UC Davis. Garbers was the starter for the second half of last season.
The depth chart for the opener was announced on Saturday, and Justin Wilcox talks about the moves in the above video.
Garbers' backup presumably will be Robby Rowell, although the depth chart says it will be Rowell or Devon Modster. Wilcox did not state whether Modster would be eligible for the opener, but it is unlikely that an "or" would have been included if Modster was eligible to play.
Chris Brown Jr. was named the starting running back, but that was expected.
Wilcox also noted that Gentle Williams, who was expected to be a starter at guard, will miss the entire season with a lower body injury. Matthew Cindric will start in his place.
Jordan Duncan, Ricky Walker III and Nikko Remigio have been named the three starting wide receivers, but eight wide receivers are expected to get playing time.
On the defensive side, the most significant note is that Luc Bequette will be the starting nose guard. Bequette has been a starting defensive end the past two seasons, but the absence of Aaron Maldonado and Siulagisipai Fuimaono for personal reasons has forced Cal to make adjustments. Bequette is still likely get snaps at defensive end, and the Bears are likely to play a lot of nickel defense, which does not include a nose guard.
There was a celebration after practice Saturday as wide receiver Ricky Walker III, outside linebacker Ben Hawk Schrider and tight end Jake Tonges were awarded scholarships after being walk-ons through fall camp.
