It's time to play some football. Not just practice, but actually play.
Cal will hold its first live scrimmage session on Tuesday in its 10th practice since the start of fall camp. The Bears practiced in full pads Friday and Saturday, but took Sunday off and were in shells for Monday's relatively short workout.
But defensive players actually will get the chance to take ball carriers to the ground on Tuesday, and the benefit to coaches is they can get a real-time gauge of how well young players in particular have progressed.
Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter talks in the video above about what he'll be looking for on Tuesday morning.
Practice begins at 10:30 a.m. and is open to the public.
Note: Still no sign of nose guard Aaron Maldonado and Siu Fuimaona -- both absent since the start of fall camp for what coach Justin Wilcox has termed "personal reasons." Wide receiver Nikko Remigio was back at practice, albeit on a non-contact day, while nickel back Traven Beck was in street clothes.
