Cal Football Video: Brandon McIlwain Excited by 'Slash' Role in Bears' Offense

No longer a quarterback, McIlwain is balancing baseball and spring football and embracing new opportunities

Here is Brandon Mcilwain's agenda this spring:

Get to class, play center field for the Cal baseball team, learn multiple positions during spring football practice.

Geez, no time for the track team?

Mcilwain's a busy guy, but he's juggling two sports nicely by all accounts. Coach Justin Wilcox is pleased by his approach to things and McIlwain was excited to share the news late last week that he had a single, double and triple in a game for the Cal baseball team.

The Bears' baseball game schedule has priority, but otherwise McIlwain will be at morning football workouts on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for the next month.

The South Carolina transfer arrived at Berkeley as a two-sport man but a quarterback in football. He got his shot there last fall, but now is embracing the chance to learn what he calls a "slash" role, meaning he can play some running back receiver and perhaps even take some direct snaps from center.

No. 1-1

I love this kid. He wants the ball. I'm stoked for the team and to see how Beau and staff utilize his unique skill it in the slot, running back, wildcat and under center....Brandon is a great talent just have to get him in the right situations to shine. I'm looking forward to seeing the Collins kid at Running Back...I think he has a ton of moxy and will be a big part of the team the next 2 years.
