Cal Football Video: Cornerback Traveon Beck Has Star Potential

Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter says Beck has great anticipation on the field

Traveon Beck's talent is obvious. He made a number of big plays for the Bears last season in the defensive backfield, recording three interceptions and four passes broken up. His intrcepton against USC was one of the key plays in Cal's victory over the Trojans.

Beck was not as consistent as he needed to be last season, and that had to do with his off-the-field work, according to defensive coordinator Tim Ruyter. DeRuyter notes in the video that Beck's intuition on the field is his strength, and he is working to improve his off-the-field work.

"He has been much more consistent off the field, and it's reflected in his work on the field," DeRuyter said of Beck, who will be a senior next fall. "I think he realizes that and realizes he can really be a leading factor on our defense. He defintely has the ability to make plays.

"He's got great anticipation and ball skills and burst."

Beck figures to be the Bears' primary nickelback next season, as virtually all the important secondary members from the 2018 season will be back next fall. However, he will get come playing time at cornerback, and Cal would not lose much if Beck is forced to play the cornerback position regularly.

On game day, Beck has the look of a star.
