Cal Football Video: Justin Wilcox Sees Versatile Potential in LB Kuony Deng

Rangy JC transfer working at an inside spot right now, but the plan is to teach him multiple positions

Linebacker Kuony Deng arrive on campus in December and was allowed to practice with the Bears as they prepped for the Cheez-It Bowl. The transfer from Independence CC in Kansas was not eligible to face TCU, but the coaching staff got enough of a look at the 6-foot-6, 225-pound junior to appreciate his talents.

Deng is concentrating on inside linebacker -- as a possible replacement for Jordan Kunaszyk -- through the first week of spring practice. But coach Justin Wilcox said the staff plans to expose him to outside linebacker as well.

In the video above, Wilcox praises Deng for his focus, intellect and eagerness.

"He's still got a lot to learn because it's a new system," Wilcox said. "But he's done a great job. I think he's fitting in really well with the guys on the team and they've done a great job of helping him along."
