Cal Football Video: Kuony Deng is Focused on Learning the Inside 'Backer Spot

Virginia native, who comes to Cal from junior college, hopes to be 'scheme transcendent' from an inside spot

At 6-foot-6, 225 pounds, Kuony Deng looks like an outside linebacker, if not a basketball small forward.

The junior from Independence Community College in Kansas is rated as the top recruit in the Bears' class.

But Deng is spending his first spring practices learning how to play inside linebacker. He would be paired alongside Evan Weaver in the spot left open by the departure of senior Jordan Kunaszyk.

Coach Justin Wilcox envisions the possibility that Deng could play a couple different roles at linebacker. For now, Deng says he is all in at the inside spot and is studying the reads he will have to make from a new position.

By the way, Deng's first name Kuony is pronounced Coin, as in flip a coin.
