Cal Football Video: OC Beau Baldwin Discusses When a Starting QB Will Be Named

Bears' offensive coordinator figures to have a depth chart in his own mind by the end of spring workouts

Offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin said on Wednesday he will "definitely" have a depth chart at the quarterback position in mind by the end of spring workouts. Whether that depth chart will be made public is another matter -- a decision that will made "above me," he said, referring to head coach Justin Wilcox

In any case, Baldwin does not expect a starter to be named publicly until the fall preseason camp. He does not want to close the door on the possibility that one of the quarterbacks will show signficant improvement over the summer. The final proving ground will come in August, but Cal coaches should have a pretty good idea which player will be the starter at quarterback by then.

Chase Garbers continues to get most of the first-team quarterback reps in the spring workouts, but Baldwin mentioned on Wednesday that Devon Modster has made noticeable progress.

The third quarterback in the spring competition is walk-on Jack Newman, although the competition for the No. 1 slot figures to be between Garbers and Modster, who played the 2017 season for UCLA.

Cal had a wet practice session on Wednesday as showers and wind made things a bit difficult. But that might also give coaches an idea of which quarterbacks can handle inclement weather.
