Cal Football Video: There is an 'Eager' Mood on the Eve of Spring Ball

Newcomers are ready to get on the field, but Justin Wilcox is eager to see a healthy Cam Goode

Spring practice begins Monday and eight newcomers will be on the field for the Bears -- three high school recruits, a pair of Division I transfers, and three junior college arrivals.

All are eager to get going, but coach Justin Wilcox knows it's easy to be eager right now. The trick is maintaining that enthusiasm through spring ball and off-season workouts.

Wilcox is just as anxious to see the "new" Cam Goode, Cal's redshirt junior outside linebacker who played just one game last season before being shelved by a lower-body injury. Goode has worked hard to get healthy ... and bigger. Wilcox reports he's now 233 pounds.

Goode made the most of his one game last season, returning an interception 38 yards for a touchdown in the season-opening 24-17 win over North Carolina. He had a 32-yard pick six in 2017 against Ole Miss (pictured above).

Here are the eight newcomers who will be on the field Monday:

DI transfers -- QB Devon Modster (UCLA) and DB Isaiah Humphries

JC transfer -- LB Kuony Deng (Independence CC), RB DeShawn Collins (CCSF) and walk-on QB Jack Newman (CCSF)

High school signees -- WR Makai Polk (El Cerrito HS), DE Brandon Croteau (Liberty HS-Peoria, AZ) and OLB Orin Patu (Rainier Beach HS-Seattle).
