Cal Track and Field: Bears' Triple Jumper Nabs 8th Place at NCAA Championships

Tuomas Kaukolahti exactly matches his career-best mark, earns first-team All-America honors

Cal junior Tuomas Kaukolahti finished eighth in the triple jump on Friday at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Austin, Texas.

Kaukolahti exactly matched his career-best jump with a leap of 54 feet, 1 3/4 inches on his second attempt. But the junior from Helsinki, Finland fouled three times on his other five jumps and never improved on that mark.

The two-time Pac-12 champion, Kaukolahti earned first-team All-America honors with his eighth-place performance. A year ago, Kaukolahti finished 18th at the NCAA meet.

TCU sophomore Chengetayi Mapaya won the title with a mark of 56-2 1/2.

Cal sophomore Iffy Joyner finished 18th in the men’s discus with a best of 181-0. Joyner had an entry mark of 193-9.

Alabama’s Kord Ferguson won the discus with a toss of 203-7.
