When the game ended with Patrick Mahomes kneel at the end of the Steelers game he had just pulled off something that his predecessor could not. Alex Smith played well in a Chiefs uniform but he was never able to beat the Steelers with Big Ben at the helm. On a day where Roethlisberger threw for over 60 passes the better QB in Three Rivers Stadium still ended up being the 22 year old phenom. Mahomes will have his ups and downs this season but it's hard to not get excited with the possibilities.
The Chiefs offense looked very hard to defend against the Steelers. While they were not able to get the running game going they were able to run the ball when it mattered the most. The Chiefs had three players with at least 90 yards receiving on the day and Hill was the only one not to go over 100 yards. Travis Kelce and Sammy Watkins both made plays up and down the field and Watkins finally showed part of what he can be in this offense. If this offense continues this onslaught it’s possible they could have three different receivers very close to 1,000 yards.
There are questions that must be answered headed into week three against the 49ers. Kansas City again found themselves in a shootout because their defense could not stop Ben and the Steelers offense for most of the game. After the 2nd quarter where they gave up 21 points to allow the Steelers back in the game the Chiefs defense tightened up. They were able to slow the Steelers passing attack enough to only allow 14 points in the second half. It will be something to watch to see how they fair against Jimmy Garoppolo in their home opener next Sunday.
