Eagles announce first wave of roster moves, pushing roster down to 64

Team has some really difficult choices now to shed another 11 players before Saturday afternoon

The Eagles trimmed 25 players from their roster on Friday, now the really difficult decisions loom. They still need to shed another 11 players to be at the limit of 53 players by Saturday at 4 p.m.

There were very few surprises in the first wave of moves unless you count linebacker Alex Singleton, who had a tremendous preseason and was all over the field in Thursday night’s preseason finale against the New York Jets, making 12 tackles on defense and another three on special teams.

Singleton, though, had the deck stacked against him. He is a 25 and would have had to unseat a veteran like Nate Gerry or L.J. Fort. That wasn’t going to happen – unless T.J. Edwards does it.

Edwards is two years younger than Singleton and also has enjoyed a strong preseason and training camp. Edwards is still one 65 players left on the roster.

Others considered on the roster bubble heading into the weekend and still hanging on to a job at the moment include:

Receivers Greg Ward and Mack Hollins.

Running backs Boston Scott, Wendell Smallwood, and Josh Adams.

Tight ends Alex Ellis and Josh Perkins.

Safeties Johnathan Cyprien and Rudy Ford.

Offensive linemen Brett Toth, Nate Herbig, and Sua Opeta.

Defensive tackles Hassan Ridgeway and Treyvon Hester.

General manager Howie Roseman is no doubt working the phones trying to find some sort of value in a trade for one of his running backs as well as maybe some others listed above.

Quarterback Cody Kessler was among those released on Friday, but rookie Clayton Thorson remains.

Cornerback Orlando Scandrick (pictured above)was also released, but he could be brought back in week two, and not be guaranteed a full year’s salary, should the Eagles keep injured Cre’Von LeBlanc on the 53-man roster, which it appears the team will do at this point then perhaps place him on Injured Reserve with a designation to return at any point during week eight of the regular season and beyond.

As for another veteran, tight end Richard Rodgers, his Eagles career could be over after he was placed on Injured Reserve. If his injury heals he can negotiate a settlement and be free to sign with another team.

Rodgers' career in Philly never amounted to much. He started last year on IR and returned after week nine. He had only one catch for seven yards in the final seven games.
