NFL Power Rankings Week 2: Atlanta Falcons fall after loss to Minnesota Vikings

The Atlanta Falcons fell five spots to No. 14 on our Week 2 NFL power rankings.

Piecing together NFL power rankings after one game is very difficult. The ranker should try to reward teams for great performances in Week 1 while at the same time not punish teams with high expectations too much after just one poor game or loss.

It’s the small sample size syndrome.

In order to avoid overreacting to the first week in our power rankings, we enacted a couple rules. No team was allowed to rise or fall more than five spots from our power rankings last week. In two or three weeks, we’ll adjust accordingly if more drastic changes to our list need to be made, but for now, we want to avoid overreacting.

The Atlanta Falcons were one of seven teams that dropped the maximum five spots this week. With them coming in at No. 9 on our list last week, that means they sit at No. 14 going into Week 2.

There are certainly concerns in Atlanta. The Falcons offensive line hasn’t gelled as hoped, and now they will have to deal with the loss of first-round pick Chris Lindstrom, who suffered a broken foot Sunday. Atlanta also struggled mightily against the run in Minnesota.

But the Falcons have too much talent to remain in the middle of the pack for long. Matt Ryan really struggled Sunday, which likely won’t happen for a second straight week, especially in the home opener.

The other six teams that dropped five spots were the Bears, Steelers, Browns, Buccaneers, Jaguars and Broncos. While things look bleak for the Florida teams and Denver, it’s too early to give up on the Bears or Steelers just like it is for the Falcons. Chicago and Pittsburgh both scored only three points in primetime games during Week 1. It wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the lowest output for both teams this season.

The Vikings, Ravens, Packers and Raiders were the teams that rose five spots. Minnesota climbed to No. 7 while the Ravens and Packers rounded out the Top 10 this week at No. 9 and 10.

Oakland is still in the bottom 10 at No. 24, but the Raiders are trending in the right direction despite losing Antonio Brown. Or should I say they rose five spots because they released the drama king.
