TODAY’S ROCKIES NEWS: Pitchers and catchers officially reported to Spring Training Tuesday and had their first workout Wednesday… The first full-squad workout will take place on Monday, Feb. 17 … The Rockies will open the 2020 Spring Training schedule vs. Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick (1:10 p.m.).
Bud Black announced to the media that Tim Melville has a cracked rib and will be out for at least six weeks.
DOWN BY THE SCHOOLYARD: Salt River Fields at Talking Stick will play host to the 2020 MLB4 tournament from Friday, Feb. 14 through Sunday, Feb. 16 … Cal Poly, Michigan, UConn and Vanderbilt will face off in the four-team tournament … Friday’s 5:00 p.m. MST matchup of Michigan vs. Vanderbilt will be televised live on MLB Network … alums of the four competing schools who are in the Rockies organization include Cal Poly Mustang Brian Mundell, Michigan Wolverines Karl Kauffmann and Will Tribucher, UConn Huskies Scott Oberg, PJ Poulin and Jacob Wallace, and Vanderbilt Commodore Ben Bowden.
HAPPY CAMPERS: The Rockies have a total of 60 players in Major League Spring Training, including 21 non-roster invitees … the 21 total non-roster invites, five are joining the Rockies from different organizations: Tim Collins (Chicago-NL, Cincinnati), Elias Díaz (Pittsburgh), Mike Gerber (San Francisco), Chris Owings (Kansas City, Boston) and Craig Stamets (Cleveland) … all five of those players saw time in the Major Leagues in the 2019 season.
14 of the non-roster invites finished the 2019 season in the Rockies organization, including 11 who were originally drafted or signed by Colorado … four players finished the 2019 season with the Rockies but were either signed to a Minor League contract (Drew Butera, Tim Melville), were acquired via trade (Joe Harvey) or were claimed off waivers (Wes Parsons) … Julian Fernández was returned to the Rockies from Miami after he was selected in the Rule 5 Draft from Colorado in 2017 (he was originally signed by the Rockies in 2012).
REMEMBER THE NAME: In parts of six seasons with the Rockies (2006-11), Ubaldo Jiménez went 56-45 with a 3.66 ERA (851.0 IP, 346 ER), 371 walks and 773 strikeouts …he ranks second in franchise history in strikeouts and fifth in wins, games started (137) and innings pitched. Jiménez made eight starts for Licey in the Dominican Winter League this offseason, going 1-4 with a 3.03 ERA (29.2 IP, 10 ER), 13 walks and 27 strikeouts … he last appeared in the Majors with Baltimore in 2017, going 6-11 with a 6.81 ERA (142.2 IP, 108 ER) in 31 appearances (25 starts).
NOT SO NEW GUY: Darryl Scott enters his first season as the Rockies’ bullpen coach after being named to the position on Nov. 1 of last year, having spent the previous three seasons as a Minor League pitching coordinator … prior to moving into the coordinator position, Scott served as the pitching coach for four different Rockies affiliations across eight seasons: Triple-A Albuquerque (2015-16), Double-A Tulsa (2013-14), High-A Modesto (2011-12) and Short-Season Tri-City (2009-10).
