Farm Report: Outfield Prospect Vince Fernandez Suspended for Amphetamine Usage

Outfielder Vince Fernandez, ranked the 24th best prospect in the Rockies organization during the off-season, has been issued a 50-game suspension by the Comissioner's office after testing positive for amphetamines.

Fernandez was the Rockies 10th-round draft choice out of Cal-Riverside in the 2016 first-year player draft after being selected the Big West Conference Player of the Year.

Playing for AA Hartford this season, he hit .263 with 13 home runs before the suspension was handed down. Fernandez was a High-A Cal League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star a year ago.

In Saturday's Games:

AAA Albuquerque (29-34) won 8-7 in 12 innings at Iowa (Cubs). Garrett Hampson (.311) delivered the game-winning, two-run home run in the 12th. He also singled and drove in a run in six at-bats. Pat Valaika (.346) equalled a franchise record with three doubles. He also drove in a run. David Holman (1-2, 9.20) allowed an unearned run in two innings for the win. Chi Chi Gonzalez (6.05) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks, striking out five, in six innings for his team-best fourth quality start.

AA Hartford (35-25) lost 1-0 against Binghamton (Mets). Barrett Barnes scored the game's only run in the fifth inning when third baseman Colton Welker committed an error on a Michael Paez ground ball in the fifth. Ty Culbreth (3-6, 4.38) suffered the loss, allowing the one unearned run and two hits, walking one and striking out five. Brian Serven (.194) doubled for the only extra base hit among the three hits for Hartford.

High A Lancaster (29-31) lost 4-2 at Lake Elsinore (Padres). Will Gaddis (3-5, 6.25) was the victim of being charged with three unearned runs in the first inning. Gaddis suffered the loss despite his third consecutive quality start. He allowed five four runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks, striking out two, in seven innings. The JetHawks were 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Luis Castro (.297) hit his California League-leading 13th home run. Luke Morgan (.136) doubled home Ryan Vilade (.255) with the other run.

Low A Asheville (26-36) lost 7-0 at Charleston (Yankees). Grant Lavigne (.260) went 3-for-3, accounting for all but one of the Asheville hits. He has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games, going 19-for-46 and raising his average 45 points. Nick Bush (3-5, 5.79) allowed four runs on eight hits, striking out six, in five innings.
