Visions of a Sunday afternoon at Coors Field nearly three years ago came to mind when Ichiro Suzuki retired last week after playing his final two games in the majors in his native Japan with the Seattle Mariners.
Ichiro spent the bulk of his career in the American League and played 2,653 games, so his time at Coors Field _ 19 games, 11 starts _ was a mere cameo. He had 14 hits there in 56 at-bats, for a humdrum .250 average in one of the more hitter-friendly ballparks in the big leagues. But Ichiro’s last hit there was historic and memorable, a triple for his 3,000th hit.
