Jon Gray, who is 4-0 against the Padres with a 2.30 ERA in his last five starts against them, gets the start in Thursday's series opener. A reliever during his career, Strahm moved into the rotation this year and is making his 12th start -- first of his career against the Rockies. He has pitched against them once in relief, allowing one run in two innings.

Current Rockies have only eight at-bats against Strahm, and Charlie Blackmon (1-for-2) is the only one with a hit. Gray has had his problems with several Padres, led by Wil Myers, who has hit .387 against him, and Hunter Renfroe, who is tied with Myers for the Padres lead in home runs against Gray with three. The one difference -- Renfroe has only six at-bats against Gray. He is 4-for-6 with the three home runs and a double -- that's 14 total bases in six at-bats.
