The #8 Michigan State Spartansimproved their record on the year to 13-2 (4-0) with an 86-77win over #12 Ohio State.

The Spartans were led by Cassius Winston who had 25 points and five assists. Nick Ward had 21 points and seven rebounds. Matt McQuaid had 12 points and six rebounds to round out the guys with double-digit points.

Tom Izzo said, “I thought our experience helped a little bit in the second half. I thought offensively we had some good shots. You don’t win in this league on the road without your defense.”

Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said, “Give Michigan State a lot of credit. They were as good as we expected, but give them the credit for pulling out the win. They were better than us in a lot of ways.”

Tom Izzo added of the game, “When you challenge people and those people respond it is probably the best part of my job. That is a good basketball team (OSU) it was a physical game and a good game, I guess for TV, but we have to play better to get to where we want to be.”

Holtmann added of the tilt that, “They are a good offensive team. We put them on the line too much. We made some not so intelligent players and they converted on the line and were efficient.”

The Spartans shot 54% from the field including 33% from the three. The Spartans shot a much improved 81% from the free throw line and had 14 assists on 25 baskets.

The Spartans led the battle of the boards 37-26. Unfortunately, the Spartans only had 12 turnovers.

Izzo played nine of his 16 players including three of the five freshmen. Aaron Henry the true freshman guard played the last five minutes. A crucial run in which the Spartans pulled away.

This was easily the most impressive win of the season so far.

The Spartans return to Big Ten action against Purdue on Tuesday back at the friendly confines of the Breslin Center. The tilt tips off at 8: 00 PM and can be seen on ESPN.
