With the 2019 football season quickly approaching, East Lansing (MI) 2021 wide receiver Andrel Anthony has seen his recruitment pick up in recent weeks as he’s landed a pair of Big Ten offers, Indiana and Michigan.
Spartan Nation caught up with Anthony to talk about the recruiting process and the work he’s put in during the offseason that’s helped his rise on the recruiting trail and Anthony said that while he’s built a reputation of being a deep threat, he’s working to become a more rounded receiver as well.
“I prefer deep balls, as a lot of people do, but I’ve been working on more of the shorter routes,” he said. “When we play better teams, they’re going to have a safety over, so you can’t just go deep all of the time. So I’m working on the shorter routes, 10 yards, eight yards, stuff like that just so I can get more involved in the game. I like to use my speed to my advantage and my quickness.”
Along with his two Big Ten offers, Anthony also holds offers from Iowa State, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Ball State, Bowling Green and Toledo.
Indiana became Anthony’s first Big Ten offer back on June 1st, after an impressive showing at a camp down in Bloomington and Anthony said that he came away impressed with the campus and coaching staff during his time with the Hoosiers.
“It feels amazing, just the camp atmosphere, the environment and their coaching was amazing there,” he said. “They taught me up there on how to be a better wide receiver, how to run routes, attack the ball, be more aggressive and catch the ball away from my body. It meant a lot to me when I got offered.”
While he doesn’t have an offer from Michigan State as of yet, there is mutual interest between the 6-foot-1, 165-pound receiver, who said that an offer from the Spartans would mean a lot to him for a variety of reasons.
“That would mean so much to me because my mom also graduated from MSU,” he said. “I’ve watched MSU all my life and I live five minutes away from there. It would mean so much to me. I really like MSU.”
Anthony told Spartan Nation that he intends to participate in Michigan State’s Elite Camp on June 15th.
