For the second time in less than a month, #5 Michigan State went to the baseball diamond to help secure a top 2019 target as the Spartans received a commitment from Zeeland (MI) East 2019 defensive end Adam Berghorst over the weekend to play both football and baseball.

Berghorst, who joins Toledo (OH) Central Catholic 2019 wide receiver Jase Bowen as the second two-sport commit for the Spartans, spoke with Spartan Nation about his commitment and said that his familiarity with both the football and baseball coaching staffs played a big role in his decision.

“I’ve known their coaches for quite a while,” he said. “The baseball and football coaches recruited me early on and the relationships were a huge part, for sure.”

Before committing to Michigan State, Berghorst fielded 16 offers, including offers from Notre Dame, Michigan, Boston College, Indiana, Iowa State, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Pittsburgh and Purdue. Berghorst was heavily recruited by both Michigan and Notre Dame after receiving offers from both schools earlier this year, but ultimately chose the Spartans.

While he was high on a several schools throughout his recruitment, Berghorst admitted that Michigan State was his favorite school throughout and made his decision two weeks before announcing his commitment.

“Michigan State was always my favorite throughout the whole (process), but I really liked Notre Dame and a few other schools,” he said. “About two weeks ago, I really decided that I was going to commit to Michigan State and I kind of picked this day as to when I was going to do it.”

Berghorst grew up a fan of the Spartans and in a family of Michigan State fans and said that when he told his parents and family members of his decision, they were understandably excited.

“They were thrilled for me,” he said. “It was an awesome day, everyone all around was super happy and just very glad for me, which I was thrilled about.”

After making his decision, the 6-foot-7, 245-pound 3-star recruit was in East Lansing to inform Michigan State head football coach Mark Dantonio and head baseball coach Jake Boss in person and Berghorst said that it was an exciting time when he spoke with both coaches.

“I went into his office around 11:30 this morning and just sat down and brought it out right away,” he said. “He stood up and gave me a hug and it was just happy all around.”

“After coach Dantonio’s office, we went to the football field and got some pictures there and then we went to the baseball game and I told them,” he said. “He (Boss) was extremely happy as well, I talked to all of the coaches and they gave me hugs and stuff like that. It was awesome.”

Another coach that Berghorst was excited to inform of his commitment was new Michigan State defensive ends coach Chuck Bullough, who he said he’s enjoyed getting to know while being recruited by the Spartans.

“I think he’s an extremely intelligent coach,” he said. “He has a unique way of coaching with his new ways, but I think he’s an extremely intelligent coach. He’s been to a lot of different places and knows a lot, so I’m excited to play for him.”

Now that he is officially committed to the Spartans, Berghorst told Spartan Nation that he intends on being a recruiter for Michigan State with Flint (MI) Carman-Ainsworth 2019 4-star defensive end Michael Fletcher.

With the recruiting process now over, Berghorst said that he’s relieved that it’s behind him and excited to be the newest member of Michigan State’s 2019 class.

“I’m truly, truly, truly thrilled,” he said. “It took up way too much of my time and was really starting to take a load on me. I’m thrilled it’s over and I feel very upbeat and 100-percent about Michigan State.”
