As No. 13/15 ranked Michigan State prepares for Arizona State tonight, junior quarterback Brian Lewerkewill also be preparing for a homecoming, as he returns to his home state for the first time in his collegiate career.

While it is a big deal for Lewerke to play in his home state, the second year starting signal caller said this week that he’s trying to keep a level head about his return, but admitted that he won’t know how he will feel until he arrives in Tempe.

“Honestly, I guess I’ll find out when I get down there - what it’ll be like,” he said. “But just try to stay calm and understand it’s just a football game, I’ve still got my teammates all around me. It’s not an individual sport at all.”

Coming out of Pinnacle high school in Phoenix, Arizona, Lewerke was regarded as one of the top quarterback recruits in the country and the third-best prospect in the state of Arizona after totaling a school record 3,426 yards of total offense and 46 touchdowns in 2014.

Lewerke would commit to Michigan State in June of 2015, choosing the Spartans over 10 other schools who extended offers to him, including Arizona and Arizona State.

Michigan State quarterbacks coach Brad Salem understands the magnitude of Saturday’s game from a personal perspective for Lewerke but said that it is important for the Spartans’ quarterback to continue doing what’s made him successful since he joined the Spartans.

“We talked about it earlier this week,” he said. “Obviously it’s a big homecoming for him, but try not to make too much of it with a lot of family and friends at the game and just be yourself and really, be you throughout the game.”

In Michigan State’s season-opening win over Utah State last week, Lewerke completed 23 of his 33 pass attempts for 287 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Tickets to Saturday’s game are obviously in high demand for Lewerke’s family and friends, but with his attention on the Sun Devils, Lewerke is leaving the distribution of tickets to his father but is looking forward to seeing those who will be on hand to support him and the Spartans.

“My dad’s handling all of that stuff, he’s got who wants tickets all figured out,” he said. “There’s a bunch of people who are buying them too, so we’ll see what the final count is that end up going there that I know.”
