EAST LANSING, Mich. –The Michigan State hockey team topped the University of Windsor, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Munn Ice Arena in the Spartans' final exhibition tuneup prior to the start of the season. Junior Taro Hirose assisted on all three goals, while sophomore Mitchell Lewandowski tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Spartans.

Goaltenders John Lethemon and Drew DeRidder split time in goal to combine for 15 saves. Lethemon started and made three saves, while DeRidder came in at the 11:22 mark of the second period and turned away another 12 shots.

The Spartans got on the board while on the power play with just over 3:00 to play in the first period when Cody Milan deflected a point shot by Dennis Cesana into the net.

Windsor was able to tie it up with 30 seconds to go in the opening period when Ethan Skinner put a rebound past Lethemon.

After killing a penalty early in the second period, the Spartans reclaimed the lead when Lewandowski scored on a breakaway. Lewandowski got behind both Windsor defensemen and took a perfect pass from Taro Hirose that sent him in alone.

With the Spartans on the power play, Patrick Khodorenko made it a 3-1 game at the 8:34 mark of the second period, putting home a loose puck from the right side of the net.

The Spartans heavily outshot the Lancers, finishing with a 41-16 edge in shots on goal.

MSU went 2-for-5 on the power play and skated off all seven of Windsor's chances on the man advantage.

"I know a lot of guys didn't get on the scoresheet but we had some great rebound chances and I think two or three of them we just missed the net on the second shot," head coach Danton Cole said. "That's how we'll have to generate offense but there's some positives in that, we just got to keep shooting."

The Spartans begin the regular season Oct. 12-13 as they host Northern Michigan for a two-game series at Munn.
