Spartans Tied For Ninth After Two Rounds in Austin

MSU is six shots back of the top six.

AUSTIN -- The Michigan State women’s golf team is tied for ninth place after two rounds at the NCAA Austin Regional after a 14-over-par 302 on Tuesday at the University of Texas Golf Club. The Spartans are 11-over-par 587 for the tournament, six strokes out of the top six heading into Wednesday’s final round. The top six teams in the regional qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Top-seeded Arkansas owns the top spot heading into the final round at 21-under-par 555 (284-271), followed by Texas at 10-under-par 566 (281-285). Florida is in third at 2-over-par 578, while Baylor, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma and Texas A&M are all tied for fourth place at 5-over-par 581.

Sarah Burnham is leading all Spartans as she is tied for eighth place at 2-under-par 142 (70-72). Burnham overcame a 4-over-par 40 on the front nine with four birdies on the back. Burnham started the back nine with two pars, followed by a birdie and then three more pars. Her two on the par-3 sixteenth hole started a string of three straight birdies to end the day.

After a 2-over-par front nine, Ally Geer shed one strokeon the back and finished with a 3-over-par 75. She’s 4-over-par 148 (73-75) and tied for 39th place.

Paz Marfa Sans was 4-over-par on the front nine and then one-over par on the back, finishing the day with a birdie and four consecutive pars to card a 5-over-par 77. She is tied for 48th place at 6-over-par 150 (73-77).

Yurika Tanida is also tied for 48th place at 6-over-par 150 (72-78). She was 4-over-par on the front nine holes and then 2-over-par on the back.

Katie Sharp ended her day with a 9-over-par 81 and is tied for 53rd place at 7-over-par 151 (70-81).

Texas A&M’s Maddie Szeryk leads the field individually at 7-under-par 137 (68-69).

The Spartans will begin their quest to break into the top six Wednesday morning, teeing off in the final round between 9 – 9:40 a.m. ET.
