NFL 2019 (Week 8): Philadelphia Eagles at Buffalo Bills

The under-performing Philadelphia Eagles face the over-performing Buffalo Bills in this Week 8 contest. Doug Pederson’s team entered the season with hopes of returning to the Super Bowl, which they won after the 2017 season. Yet, after two consecutive road losses, the Birds find themselves under .500 and in desperation mode. Meanwhile, the Bills have been one of this season’s biggest surprises at 5-1, with their only loss coming to the juggernaut known as the 2019 New England Patriots.

Eagles: The Eagles offense, led by quarterback Carson Wentz, has looked out of sync thus far this season. Wentz has completed only 61.3 percent of his passes but has thrown for 1,649 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Eagles’ running game, led by Jordan Howard and Miles Sanders, has been decent if not stellar. Howard has rushed for 347 yards and four touchdowns while Sanders has amassed 220 yards on the ground. Wide receivers Nelson Agholor and Alshon Jeffery along with tight end Zach Ertz will be the key to this game. If they can get open and exploit the Buffalo secondary the Eagles will be able to put up some points. On the other side of the ball, the Eagles are led by a solid secondary that features Rodney McLeod, Malcolm Jenkins and Rasul Douglas. Up front, Brandon Graham leads the Birds with four sacks, while Hassan Ridgeway has a pair as well.

Bills: Josh Allen leads a solid offense that features wide receivers Josh Brown and Cole Beasley. Allen has completed 62.4 percent of his passes for 1,324 yards. His touchdown to interception ratio of seven to seven is not strong, yet he makes up for some of his deficiencies in the passing game with his leadership and his legs. He has rushed for 190 yards and three touchdowns. Brown has caught 33 passes and Beasley has hauled in 30. Veteran running back Frank Gore has been a stalwart for this offense as he has amassed 388 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Defensively the Bills have been led by Tremaine Edwards, Lorenzo Alexander, Micah Hyde and Jordan Phillips (who has 4 sacks this season). Buffalo has held the opposition to a paltry 15.2 points per game. The big question in this game is whether the Bills can continue this defensive dominance or not.

Prediction: This is a crucial game for Philadelphia and Pederson will have his team ready for this challenge. Expect Buffalo to be exploited, especially on offense as the belief here is that Philly’s defense will expose Allen’s passing weaknesses. If Buffalo is going to win this game it’s going to be via the air, and the feeling here is that the Eagles’ secondary is not going to let that happen.

Philadelphia Eagles 24, Buffalo Bills 17
