NFL 2019: PAT on the Back (Week 1)

By Julie Voigt and Russell S. Baxter

Welcome to the NFL’s 100th season and the latest collaboration by Julie Voigt and Russell S. Baxter aka PFG VIBE. That’s Voigt’s Insights Baxter’s Expertise and we consistently bring our passion in covering the National Football League.

So here’s our latest work and it will be a new weekly staple. Both of us will be making our picks for the top offensive and defensive players each week, as well as the top performance by a team.

Player and Team. PAT…on the Back.

Here are our Week 1 selections.

Offensive Player of the Week:

VI: QB Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

What can I say? Prescott came in to this season and threw four touchdown passes in an impressive 35-17 win over the New York Giants. Not only that, he achieved the first perfect passer rating by a Cowboys’ quarterback in 50 years. He is delivering at the perfect time. Can you say contract extension?

BE: QB Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

All the offseason talk about who should get the money and who shouldn’t in Dallas meant little on the opening Sunday against the visiting Giants. Prescott missed only seven of his 32 throws, was not sacked and threw for 405 yards and four touchdowns. The Cowboys played turnover-free football in the convincing win.

Defensive Player of the Week:

VI: S Malik Hooker, Indianapolis Colts

Just when you thought you had seen every single one-handed catch, along comes Colts’ safety Malik Hooker. His end zone interception of Chargers’ quarterback Philip Rivers prevented another touchdown and it would set up the game-tying drive for Indianapolis. Despite Hooker’s heroics, Los Angeles wound up prevailing in overtime, 30-24.

BE: S Anthony Harris, Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings’ defense was on top of its game again against the usually-potent Atlanta attack. Minnesota came away with a pair of Matt Ryan interceptions and a fumble by Devonta Freeman. And all wound up in the hands of Harris. He also racked up five tackles and was credited with a pair of passes defensed as well.

Team of the Week

VI: New Orleans Saints

What ended on a bad note last season seemed like it was about to happen again. The hustle of Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees and company led the team to a 30-28 victory over a very hot Houston Texans team. It snapped a five-game losing streak in season openers dating back to 2014.

BE: Oakland Raiders

It’s been a few weeks to forget for the Silver and Black. But it was time to play football on Monday night and the Raiders responded with an impressive victory over the visiting Broncos. Jon Gruden’s team sacked Joe Flacco three times, this one year after Oakland finished with a league-low 13 QB traps. The offensive line kept Derek Carr out of harm’s way. Add in zero turnovers and it added up to a 24-16 triumph.
