NFL 2019: PAT on the Back (Week 12)

By Julie Voigt and Russell S. Baxter

Welcome to the conclusion of the twelfth week of the NFL’s 100th season and the latest collaboration by Julie Voigt and Russell S. Baxter aka PFG VIBE. That’s Voigt’s Insights Baxter’s Expertise and we consistently bring our passion in covering the National Football League.

So here’s our latest work and the latest installment of our newest weekly staple. Both of us have once again made our picks for the top offensive and defensive players each week, as well as the top performance by a team.

Player and Team. PAT…on the Back.

Here are our Week 12 selections.

Offensive Player of the Week:

VI: RB Frank Gore, Buffalo Bills

On Sunday vs. Denver, he ran 15 times for 65yards and now ranks third on the league’s career rushing yardage list as he surpassed Barry Sanders. Gore currently has 15,289 rushing yards and he needs 1,437 to tie Chicago Bears GOAT Walter Payton (16,726) for second place. Nonetheless, perhaps it’s time for the ageless performer to get the respect he deserves.

BE: WR Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The unsung wideout has had a huge year and it may surprise some that his 70 catches for 1,071 yards and nine scores are slightly better than heralded teammate Mike Evans (62 receptions for 1,043 yards, 7 touchdowns). Against the Falcons in Week 12, the sure-handed Godwin snagged seven balls for 184 yards and two scores in the Buccaneers’ 35-22 victory at Atlanta.

Defensive/Special Teams Player of the Week:

VI: LB Joe Schobert, Cleveland Browns

Schobert contributed in the 41-24 victory against the Miami Dolphins with five tackles, a pair of picks and four passes defended. This is his second straight game with two interceptions. The Browns have now won three consecutive games.

BE: DT Sheldon Richardson, Cleveland Browns

With Myles Garrett suspended indefinitely and fellow defensive end Larry Ogunjobi hit with the same punishment for one game, the Browns’ up-and-down defense needed someone to step up in terms of the pass rush. The talented Richardson finished with five tackles, two sacks, knocked down a pass and forced a fumble as Freddie Kitchens’ club held off the stubborn Dolphins, 41-24.

Team of the Week

VI: Baltimore Ravens

Yes, this is not the first time I have picked this team. But after the 45-6 Monday night victory over the Rams at Los Angeles, it’s no surprise that second-year quarterback Lamar Jackson is very deserving of NFL MVP honors. And the Ravens are serious contenders to reach Super Bowl LIV.

BE: San Francisco 49ers

A battle between the leaders of the NFC North and NFC West was moved into prime time. But it was Kyle Shanahan’s club that flexed its muscles as the 49ers made it look easy in overwhelming the Green Bay Packers. San Francisco jumped out to a 23-0 halftime lead, limited Aaron Rodgers and his teammates to 198 total yards and one touchdown and sacked the talented quarterback five times in a 37-8 triumph.
