NFL 2019: PAT on the Back (Week 13)
By Julie Voigt and Russell S. Baxter
Welcome to the conclusion of the 13th week of the NFL’s 100th season and the latest collaboration by Julie Voigt and Russell S. Baxter aka PFG VIBE. That’s Voigt’s Insights Baxter’s Expertise and we consistently bring our passion in covering the National Football League.
So here’s our latest work and the latest installment of our newest weekly staple. Both of us have once again made our picks for the top offensive and defensive players each week, as well as the top performance by a team.
Player and Team. PAT…on the Back.
Here are our Week 13 selections.
Offensive Player of the Week:
VI: QB Deshaun Watson, Houston Texans
The Houston Texans appears to be on course to win a second consecutive AFC South division and who knows where they would be without their young quarterback. Watson and the Texans defeated the New England Patriots, 28-22, handing the defending Super Bowl champions their second loss of 2019. The third-year signal-caller threw three touchdown passes and also snared a scoring toss from wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins as Houston came away with an impressive win.
BE: RB Derrick Henry, Tennessee Titans
Mike Vrabel’s team has turned things around as of late and quarterback Ryan Tannehill has played a big part in the Titans’ current three-game winning streak. But so has Henry, who came up big last Sunday at Indianapolis in his team’s 31-17 triumph. He overcame an early lost fumble and finished with 149 yards rushing and one touchdown on 26 carries. Henry also snared three passes for 17 yards as Tennessee rallied for a 17-7 deficit and scored the final 24 points of the game.
Defensive/Special Teams Player of the Week:
VI: LB Devin White, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The fifth overall pick in April’s draft has quite the afternoon at Jacksonville during the Buccaneers’ 28-11 win. White finished tied for the team lead with seven tackles, knocked down two passes, recorded an interception and scooped up a fumble by Jaguars’ quarterback Nick Foles and took it back 14 yards for a touchdown during the club’s impressive victory.
BE: DE Cameron Jordan, New Orleans Saints
On Thanksgiving night at Atlanta, Sean Payton’s team wrapped up its third consecutive NFC South title by holding on for a 26-18 win over the Falcons. Speaking of holding on, that’s that the New Orleans’ defense did to Matt Ryan in this contest. The Saints sacked the veteran signal-caller nine times, four by Jordan, and forced him into three turnovers. It was sweet revenge for Payton’s club, which was handled by Atlanta a few weeks earlier at the Superdome.
Team of the Week
VI: Miami Dolphins
Not only did the Dolphins stun the Philadelphia Eagles, 37-31, but how often do you get to see a punter throw the ball to his kicker and score a touchdown? That trick play by Brian Flores’ team may be the best ever.
BE: Miami Dolphins
Yes, great minds think alike and it’s hard to ignore what Brian Flores’ team managed on Sunday against the Eagles. Miami rallied from 14 points down in the third quarter and pulled out all the stops in their 37-31 victory. The Dolphins have played much better since their winless start and kudos to an organization that supposedly wasn’t interested in winning the season.
