Beathard: Jacoby as "deserving" of Hall of Fame as Grimm

Count former GM Bobby Beathard among those who believe Joe Jacoby belongs in the Hall of Fame, with Beathard saying Jacoby is as deserving as Hall-of-Fame teammate Russ Grimm.

Former Washington tackle Joe Jacoby was a surprise finalist for the Class of 2016 ... and not just because he made the cut to 15 for the first time in 18 years of eligibility; but because he made the cut to 10, too.

That’s supposed to be the springboard for the next move … which is to Canton.

Not surprisingly, Jacoby gained the endorsement of former Redskins’ general manager Bobby Beathard on the latest Talk of Fame Network broadcast – with Beathard telling us that Jacoby might have been the best offensive lineman on Washington’s “Hogs,” a group that included Hall-of-Fame guard Russ Grimm.

“I’ll tell you what,” said Beathard, “he might have been. He wasn’t as athletic as Russ … at all. But, boy, what he could do. He had such long arms and such strength and maybe the smartest guy on our offensive line. He was amazing.”

An all-decade choice, Jacoby was one of two tackles to make the cut to 10 in February. Orlando Pace was the other, and he went on to become one of the five modern-era inductees for the Class of 2016, the fourth tackle to be enshrined in the last five years.

That should enhance Jacoby’s chances for 2017. So should this: Aside from running back LaDainian Tomlinson, the field for next year appears to be wide open.

“I tell you what,” said Beathard, “every year I keep thinking he’s got to get in there because he’s certainly deserving. We were fortunate. We had a heckuva group there. And If Russ is in … nothing against Russ; he deserves to be in … but Jacoby certainly deserves to be in. And Russ would tell you the same thing.”
