Talk of Fame Network Believes in Miracles

It was only a wild-card playoff game, but it provided the NFL one of the most memorable moments in post-season history.
Tennessee’s “Music City Miracle” in the 1999 playoffs against the Buffalo Bills was selected by Talk of Fame Network voters as the second-most memorable comeback in NFL wild-card history.
The Talk of Fame Network had already dubbed Buffalo’s rally from a 35-3 deficit over the Houston Oilers in the 1992 playoffs as the gold-medal comeback, so this poll sought out a silver medalist.
All three of the Talk of Fame Network hosts -- Ron Borges, Rick Gosselin and Clark Judge -- voted for the Music City Miracle, which edged San Francisco’s 30-27 victory over Green Bay on a 25-yard Steve Young-to-Terrell Owens touchdown pass with three seconds left in the 1998 playoffs.
The Music City Miracle received 27.8 percent of the vote and the Owens catch 25.9 percent. But the two finishes weren’t that close in the mind of Judge.
“The Music City Miracle had everything you wanted – drama, a frantic finish, a little bit of magic...and one heckuva memorable play,” Judge said. “Plus, it launched the Titans not only to the next round, but to the Super Bowl."
Let’s revisit the play. The Bills took a 16-15 lead on a 41-yard field goal by Steve Christie with 16 seconds remaining. There was enough time for a kickoff and maybe one more play.
Lorenzo Neal took the Buffalo pooch kick at the Tennessee 25 and lateraled to tight end Frank Wycheck. As the Bills converged, Wycheck threw a cross-field pass to wide receiver Kevin Dyson, who raced 75 yards alone down the sideline for the game-winning touchdown with three seconds remaining.
“No way can you beat the Music City Miracle,” Borges said. “A cross-field pass from a tight end that a receiver has to catch off his shoe tops with a wide open field in front of him with a playoff win hanging on it all? Plus then you could go out for ribs and blues music, which satisfies the winners and assuages the losers.”
Tim Tebow’s 80-yard touchdown pass to DeMaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime that gave Denver a 29-23 victory over Pittsburgh in the 2011 wild-card round finished No. 3 with 18.5 percent of the votes.
