Training Camp Roster Preview: DB Jake Carlock

What you need to know about defensive back Jake Carlock

Carlock is a two-year star at LIU where he did a little bit of everything for the Pioneers. He was primarily a defensive back (strong safety/cover linebacker), where, in two seasons, he put up 131 total tackles and had six interceptions and 19 passes defensed.

Carlock led LIU in tackles in 2017 with 67 (12 for a loss) and was named the 2018 Northeast 10 Defensive Player of the Year.

A special teams ace, Carlock also added a blocked kick to his resume.

Looking Ahead

The Giants might be stacked enough at defensive back, but there is another role on this team that Carlock could potentially fill: long snapper.

“He is a very good long snapper," head coach Pat Shurmur said of Carlock. "We are always looking for guys at skill positions,” Shurmur said. “He is a very accomplished linebacker as well.”

The incumbent, Zak DeOssie, is under contract for the current season, so barring an injury, Carlock, if he impresses enough, would probably have to sit on the practice squad if he shows he's worth a spot. But DeOssie won't be around forever, and good long snappers are hard to find.
