LEFTOVER GAME QUOTES LaFleur's intro from last night. I just want to start off, man, what a hard-fought football game. You’ve got to give the Bears a ton of credit. We knew they were going to be a really tough opponent. They were for four quarters, we knew it was going to be a four-quarter battle. Just really proud of our defense, the effort, I thought they were smothering. I thought our special teams really picked up the slack. Obviously we’ve got a lot of room for improvement from the offensive side of the ball.

Rodgers, on whether it was a bittersweet win, considering how bad the offense played: It’s just sweet. It really is. Obviously I hold myself to a high standard and I didn't play great tonight. But to watch a defense like that, man that gives you a lot of confidence for where this team can go. In a game that most people thought we were going to get probably trounced. To have them play that well and to win in a tough environment against the reigning NFC North champs, that’s going to be a fun plane ride.

Za'Darius Smith insisted Preston Smith do the interview with him. Here's a bit of it that I didn't use: Making plays together P: It makes it all easier, having a guy like Za’Darius on the other side of me, it makes the quarterback have to make decisions because he can’t stand there or one of us is going to hit him. And you’ve got Amos over the top, including some other rookies contributing to this defense. A lot of other guys contributed to this defense to make us successful. Z: I feel great about it. Everybody is doing our job. We talked about it, we all do our job, we’re going to be dominant. It doesn’t matter who it is, Amos, P, 23, 50, we’re all going to come together as one.

Did you make a statement to the league? P: I think we got a lot of people aware of what this defense could be tonight. We’re going to work on the stuff we need to work on for next week. I think we woke a lot of people up. I think a lot of people didn’t believe in us, they had us ranked low. But we don’t care about any of that outside noise, we’re about what we can control and that’s playing hard defense and winning games. Z: Most definitely. I can say this, before we started we came together as a team, I talked to them and I told everybody we’re going to shock the world and how shocked the world is going to be. I felt we did that tonight and we’re going to go forward and get ready for next week.

Blake Martinez is among the players who spoke with sky-high expectations for this defense. Was this game affirmation? Oh, yeah, 100 percent. With the guys we have in this locker room and how much work we’ve put in throughout OTAs and the culture that we’re building, it’s been incredible to see how it’s grown. I knew that we were going to be special. Now, it was time to show it.

Quote of the game from Tramon Williams, which I used in the on-the-fly game story. We wanted to make Mitch play quarterback. We knew they had a lot of weapons, we knew they were dangerous. We knew all of those things. But we knew if we could make Mitch play quarterback, that we’d have a chance. Plus, we have some new toys up front, too, who did their job up front and looked good. They did their thing today.

That affirmation question I asked of Martinez, I also asked it to Williams. I think it’s a start. 10-3, I don’t know if anyone of us would have guessed that the score would have been 10-3. But we knew what we were capable of. It’s a start. I’m not going to say it’s affirmation yet but we’ve still got other tough opponents coming up. Styles makes matchups. We’ve got different matchups and we’ve got to match everybody.

Rodgers, on the defense Yeah, that was fun to watch. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a performance like that. Obviously, a lot of credit to Mike Pettine and his staff. But to those players, I mean, just incredible effort. We didn’t do them a whole lot of favors with our own performance on offense. I mean, every time we needed something, a stop, they came up with some really big plays. Great for Adrian coming back to the team that drafted him to get a pick in the endzone there. But a lot of credit to the front. I thought we put a lot of pressure on ‘em. It looked like obviously both the Smiths, they were in the mix a bunch. It was just a dominating performance. It gives you a lot of confidence when you play like that on offense and win a game by a touchdown.

I wrote a story about the free agents and somehow left off this one from LaFleur: Yeah, they gave us a big boost, that’s for sure. It was great for Adrian to come in here and close out that game with a pick right there at the end. But I’m extremely happy that Gutey and his crew did a great job of getting those guys for us, because they were a difference tonight.
