Ben Watson says potentially surrendering No. 84 jersey to Antonio Brown is 'not my decision'

Watson doesn't think it's in hands to give up his jersey number to the newly-added Patriots receivers.

One of the talking points of star-studded receiver Antonio Brown joining the New England Patriots this week is what number he will be wearing on his jersey. One would think he would wear the same number he has his entire career, No. 84, but that number is currently being worn by veteran tight end, Ben Watson.

Though the number has a sentimental value to Watson, he doesn't believe it's his decision to make in giving up the jersey number to Brown.

“I’ve been asked that a lot,” Watson told “Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade on Monday. “The reason why I took 84 … I’ve been an 82 since I left New England … And the reason why I took 84 back was because it was the number I was drafted in, the number I had when I was with the Patriots before, the number I felt like I would finish the circle in.

“But with that being said Mr. Kraft, the owner, owns all the numbers and I was told very early on in my career by a very wise veteran that we’re all renting those lockers and so it’s not my decision about the numbers. So we’ll see what happens with the numbers.”

As much as Watson may think it's Robert Kraft's decision to make, chances are it will ultimately be Watson's decision to make. Maybe Brown and can throw him some cash, or maybe the 38-year-old will give him the No. 84 jersey out of the kindness of his heart. We shall have an answer within the next day or two.

Fresh (questionable) start, fresh number.

By no means should Antonio Brown be gifted 84. It could go straight to his head and send a message that the Patriots are afraid of his antics. If I were Bill, I would tell him what number he is going to wear.

A good first test to see if AB is worried about the game or the extra stuff that comes with it

I'd like to see him in a new number. Just like how Moss has number 81 during his time with the Patriots. Could signify a fresh start instead if sticking with 84. And for AB's sake he better just take whatever number we give him at this point lol
