Imagine watching a crucial 3-2 pitch sail across the plate—borderline high—and seeing the batter punched out. Replay shows it missed the strike zone. The team loses a run, maybe even the game. For decades, such moments have fueled fan frustration, manager ejections, and debates about umpire consistency. But in recent years, Major League Baseball has been quietly preparing a solution: robot umpires.

More accurately known as the automated ball-strike (ABS) system, this technology is designed to inject precision and fairness into one of the sport’s most subjective calls: balls and strikes. Through pilot programs and gradual integration, ABS is changing the conversation around officiating—while preserving the human element in the process.

How ABS Works—and Where It’s Been Tested

MLB began testing ABS technology in partnership with the independent Atlantic League in 2019. Since then, its use has expanded significantly. By 2023, all Triple-A ballparks had some version of ABS, and in 2025, Spring Training saw it implemented in 13 MLB complexes, covering about 60% of all games.

Rather than completely remove the umpire from the process, MLB has embraced a hybrid challenge system. Under this model, umpires call the game as usual, but each team gets two chances to challenge a pitch per game. When challenged, the ABS system determines whether the call should be overturned—based on data tracked with millimeter-level precision.

The results? Over half of challenged calls were overturned during Spring Training 2025, with pitchers and catchers proving most accurate in identifying missed calls. Despite the high overturn rate, challenges were rare (about 2.6% of pitches) and added only a minute to the game on average.

The Accuracy Edge

Even the best MLB umpires miss about 6% of ball-strike calls. That may not seem like much, but in a game with ~150 pitches per side, that’s 9 missed calls per game. These errors can influence outcomes, momentum, and even postseason chances. Contrast that with ABS systems like Hawk-Eye and TrackMan, which track pitch location to within a hundredth of an inch.

The system also enforces a consistent zone—no more adjusting to an umpire’s “tight” or “wide” zone depending on the night. This matters more than fans may realize. As Rockies coach Aaron Westlake noted, a known and consistent strike zone allows players to hone their approach and removes bias or variability from umpiring.

Players and Coaches React

Feedback from players and coaches has largely been positive, especially regarding the challenge format. San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin noted that ABS reduces the pressure on umpires and can “take some of the controversy out of it.” Pitchers like Justin Verlander, who tested the system in Triple-A rehab starts, found the challenges unobtrusive and accurate.

Hitters are also adjusting. AAA infielder Joey Loperfido observed that knowing exactly where the zone is helps batters become more selective. And while some players initially worried about losing the art of pitch framing or the “feel” of human officiating, most now view the system as a fairer way to resolve borderline calls.

Common Criticisms—and Rebuttals

Not everyone is sold. Critics argue that baseball’s charm lies in its imperfections. Nationals 1B Nathaniel Lowe said he’d “prefer to be punched out by a human,” and others point to the long-standing relationships between catchers and umpires as integral to the game.

There are also concerns about technical failures—what happens if the Wi-Fi goes out? Or if the system glitches mid-game?

But MLB has prepared for these. Games using ABS are staffed with technical personnel, and the league has refined the strike zone definitions to prevent early errors (like balls being called strikes when crossing behind the plate). Most importantly, the challenge model preserves human involvement. Umpires still manage the game, stepping aside only when a team invokes their limited challenges.

Fan Reception and Transparency

In today’s world of instant replays and online outrage, bad calls don’t just affect games—they can go viral. The ABS system offers fans a sense of justice and transparency. When a bad strike call is overturned in real-time on TV, it builds trust. Fans appreciate knowing the true location of the pitch decided the outcome—not a moment of human error.

Additionally, ABS can enhance broadcasts. Pitch location data, strike zone overlays, and real-time challenge outcomes bring a new level of engagement and clarity to the viewing experience.

A Strategic Evolution

There’s also a tactical layer. Teams must decide when to use their challenges. They tend to avoid high-stakes counts (like 3-2) unless they’re confident, making the game even more nuanced. Who should challenge—a catcher, batter, or pitcher? Should a team save its second challenge for a late-inning situation?

These dynamics add a modern, strategic twist to the classic game.

Looking Ahead
