Backup QB getting more comfortable with a new offense

New Orleans Saints QB Tom Savage

Saturday, August 11, 2018

Grade your performance from Thursday night. What’d you think?

“I thought we did a good job of putting some points on the board. Obviously, you want to score every drive out there and execute. I think there were a couple throws I missed that I can improve on, but other than that, I thought it was a good first preseason game and we got the win.”

This offense was a lot to digest early on for you, where do you feel like you are at in that progress?

“I think it's always going to be a learning process. You just have to keep grinding at it, keep asking these guys questions, and using all the resources here to keep learning and try to get on the same page as everyone else.”

Is it slowing down a bit for you?

“Yeah, for sure it is. I'm sure once the season gets going and once we see some different looks, I’m sure there’s going to be new game-time plays and stuff I’m going to have to learn.

With Taysom Hill in practice and games, do you see it as a competition to show you are good enough to help the team as Coach Payton has said to us versus a competition against each other?

“I do. Obviously, you look at Taysom and I and we’re two completely different quarterbacks. I think we just have to go out there and keep showing that if our number gets called, we'll be ready to go, and we can help this team win.”

Could you talk about Marcus Williams on defense. How aware do you have to be of him when he’s in the drills?

“Just being here for this short period of time, I've seen what that guy can do. I mean the range that he has is pretty unbelievable, really. He’s a really, really good player.”

What impresses you about Taysom Hill?

“I mean you look at him and he is like Hercules. He is ungrounded and a good player. He is one of my best friends on the team and he’s a phenomenal person. He brings a whole unique style to this game.”

What do you think about Drew’s (Brees) routine?

“It is funny, because before I got here I just thought, (he was) obviously one of the hardest workers in the league. I was surprised at how much more he does work than what I was anticipating. He’s relentless in his work ethic and a great guy to be behind.”

It seems like it’s very regimented and on schedule?

“Yeah. I mean that's kind of the way the great ones are. It's good to watch it and start to create your own routine.”

Have you ever done a play-by-play of his routine in your head?

“Yeah. Even he’s pre-practice workout is routine every day. He’s got something that he’s doing (every minute), so I think’s a common thing with all the great ones. They all have a unique routine that they follow and do every day.”
