NFL historian John Turney of Pro Football Journal ranks the top offensive tackles of the post World-War II era, and, predictably, the Bengals’ Anthony Munoz and Green Bay’s Forrest Gregg head the list.
Both are Hall of Famers, and that figures. Of Turney’s Top 10 tackles, all are in Canton.
In fact, it’s not until you get to Cleveland’s Joe Thomas at 13 that someone is listed who is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But Thomas isn’t eligible for Canton until 2023.
That means the first tackle not yet inducted … who IS eligible for Canton … is the 14th choice, and that’s Atlanta’s Mike Kenn.
Unfortunately, Kenn’s last year of eligibility as a modern-era candidate was this year, and he wasn’t even a semifinalist. As a matter of fact, he was a semifinalist only three times – 2015-17.
So how does Turney stack his best tackles from 1945 on? Keep reading.
