Choosing the best wide receiver from the pre-World War II era is a cinch. Just pull the name Don Hutson from the record books, and go to the head of the class.

But then what? Who were the best and brightest wide receivers after Hutson?

That’s not so easy. In fact, it’s downright difficult, mostly because the NFL wasn’t about passing in that era. It was all about running the ball and playing defense.

Nevertheless, NFL historian Chris Willis of Pro Football Journal – a guy who heads the Research Library at NFL Films – put together a list of the NFL’s top wide receivers prior to World War II, and they’re here for your perusal.
