A Closer Look on How Bradley Roby's Signing and How Impacts the Houston Texans

How does Bradley Roby impact the Houston Texans? We take a closer look at the addition of Roby.

The Houston Texans have signed free agent cornerback Bradley Roby to a one-year deal worth $10 million that will insert him into the starting defense. With the addition of Roby, it is a clear sign that the Texans are interested in making over the secondary but not at the expense of over spending.

With the addition of Roby, what does it mean for the Texans?

We take a look.

  • Roby has the first crack to start opposite of veteran cornerback Johnathan Joseph with Aaron Colvin set to play the nickel position. Roby started his first full season last year after playing 784 defensive snaps his first three seasons on the field. He ended up playing 926 snaps (85.98%) which was the second most on the Broncos defense in 2018. Starting 15 games he appeared in, he posted 50 total tackles, 12 passes defenses and an interception.
  • He has the ability to bump inside if needed but most of his work was done on the outside for the Broncos. Roby ran hot and cold and he gave up 7 touchdowns receptions on the season and allowed 9.4 yards per target (102 targets) and 14.7 yards per receptions (65 receptions allowed). The question remains if Roby can bounce back on his one-year prove it deal with the Texans this coming season.
  • Speaking of play making, the Texans are looking to add active players when the ball is in the air. The Texans added Tashaun Gipson who is one of five safeties to have 20 interceptions since the start of the 2012 season. Roby has a solid resume also when he is on the field putting up 60 passes defensed, 7 interceptions, 7 forced fumbles, 4 fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns in his five seasons with the Broncos.
  • If there is one thing that the Texans wanted to do during the off-season is get faster at the cornerback position. Roby brings exactly that to the position. Roby ran a 4.39 at the NFL Combine in 2014 which ranked him 4th that season. Roby brings a speed factor to the cornerback position that has been needed for sometime.
